OCI – Renewal Guidelines

India government has updated rules regarding OCI card renewal process for minors. According to the recent relaxation in requirements for OCI Card Reissue:

(i) OCI cardholder is required to upload ONLINE a copy of the new passport and a recent photo (not more than 30 days old) each time a new passport is issued.  The uploading of these documents may be done within three months of receipt of the new passport. This does not involve any submission of documents through the Outsourcing Service Provider/Consulate and will be free of cost. New OCI card will NOT be issued.

(ii) However, the only exception to the above is mandatory re-issue of the OCI card when an applicant gets  a new passport issued after completing 20 years of age. In this process, applicant will need to fill application form online under OCI Miscellaneous Services and get a new OCI card reissued from their nearby Indian consulate.

(iii)    Foreign spouse of an Indian Citizen or spouse of an OCI cardholder is required to upload a copy of the new passport and a recent photo ONLINE each time a new passport is issued, along with other supporting documents.

The above is the current guidelines as of Jan 1, 2023, subject to change by the Indian Consulate.

OCI – Signature for Minors

Do I need thumbprint or signature for my minor child’s OCI application?

A lot of times we get asked the question, for the OCI minor application, if my child is below five years, should they put his/her left thumbprint or right thumbprint?

As per the Indian Consulate, the following are the guidelines to be followed for minor applicants below 5 years.

  • For child of 5 years and above, signature/name of the minor child should be in the signature box under their photo on the first page of the OCI Application Form.
  • Uploaded Signature/Thumb impression must be legible on plain white background.
  • For child less than 5 years of age thumb impression of the minor child should be in the signature box under their photo using only a BLACK or BLUE inkpad.
  • Parents cannot sign on behalf of the child under any circumstances on the PART A of the OCI Application Form.
  • Minors must sign/place thumb impression under PART B of the OCI Application form.
  • Wherever parent’s sign, the signature must match with the passport signature.

NOTE – If the signature is OUTSIDE of the boxes provided, the application will be REJECTED. If the thumbprint/signature is not clear after it is uploaded online, it needs to be uploaded again or minor has to sign in the application form.
